Freight Transportation Logistics: What Is It and How Does It Work?

Dispatchers, Masters of Logistics!

At Bourret, when we talk about dispatching, we are referring to the nine dispatchers who are responsible for the smooth operation of our distribution network. They manage regional and international transportation by road and rail network, in TL and LTL.

Frequently the same 25 to 30 truck drivers are assigned to each dispatcher. When demand is high, we turn to owner-operators for help. You can therefore be sure that you will always have the same quick and efficient service.

How Do I Benefit from Logistics?

Transportation needs may vary. Whether you need multiple deliveries every week or one per year, a dispatcher will plan the most effective transportation option for you, taking into account your destination, schedule, freight volume, special measures (fragile or dangerous materials, etc.) and any other specific requirements regarding your load.

With our turnkey service, you do not have to worry about these details. And if you want to know the status of your freight in real time, our online tracking system gives you access to that information!

What Documents Are Required for Pickup?

To accelerate the online or phone process, make sure you have this information on hand:

  • Addresses for the freight collection and delivery;
  • The specific delivery date (if applicable);
  • The nature of the goods;
  • Exact specifications of hazardous materials, if any;
  • The type of packaging: parcels, pallets or other;
  • The dimensions and weight of your load;
  • The name and contact information of the person who will pay the freight costs.

Logistics: Before, During and After Transportation

The dispatch team plays a key role before, during and/or after transportation. Depending on the route and nature of your freight, this team:

  • Finds the truck closest to the pickup location and assigns it to the collection;
  • Establishes transport routes. Taking into account traffic on roads, road construction works that could delay delivery, weather forecasts and other challenges, the team may suggest an alternative route;
  • Finds an alternative in case of an unexpected event (such as an accident or a mechanical failure) to make the delivery in time;
  • Prepares documents for weighing, customs clearance (international division) and rail transfers (if applicable), as well as the bill of lading specifying the nature of each lot and each load;
  • Monitors transportation using an online system;
  • Responds to any emergency in the shortest possible time.
